Pupil premium is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers. At Burton Green Primary School, when we allocate Pupil Premium spend, we aim to use high impact “overtime” strategies, which have been shown to be particularly effective to Close the Gap, especially proven to be effective at supporting children who are eligible for Free School Meals(FSM). Pupil premium is also received for service children, and children who are looked after, or under special guardianship arrangements. As a school we use research from both the Department for Education, Ofsted and the Sutton Trust to support our allocation of Pupil Premium spend for maximum effect.
Sports Premium Grant for Primary Schools: Information for Parents
The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils, in the 2016 to 2017 academic year, to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. Schools can choose how they use the funding, for example to:
- hire specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers during PE lessons
- support and involve the least active children by running after-school sports clubs and holiday clubs, e.g. the Change4Life clubs
- provide resources and training courses in PE and sport for teachers
- run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
- run sports activities with other schools
Since September 2013, Ofsted inspections report on PE and sport provision and on how schools spend their additional funding. The Government also holds schools accountable by requiring them to publish on their websites, details of how they spend (or will spend) their PE and sport grant. They must also include detail about the impact this funding has on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment.
